Why do I have to change the valve on my BBQ Cylinder?

Those of you who had your barbecue cylinders filled last summer will already be aware of new regulations regarding the valves for your cylinder.

All tanks manufactured after October 1, 1998 were fitted with a new Overfill Prevention Device. Since April 1, 2002, cylinders without these OPD valves could not be refilled by law.

The new OPD valves will prevent overfilling of your propane gas cylinder, making filling and using propane cylinders even safer than before.

It is easy to identify whether your tank has the new OPD valve. The valve is triangular in shape and is marked with "OPD."

We have OPD valves in stock and can install and refill your tank at our Trumansburg office in a matter of 10 or 15 minutes. The new valves cost $$26.95, and there is a $2.00 charge for a federally-required inspection. we charge $15 to fill a Barbeque Cylinder.

We generally advise customers that, if they are replacing the valave on a barbeque cylinder (one that holds about 20 lbs.), it is more cost-effective to purchase a new cylinder. With tanks larger than 20 lbs, it is usually more cost-effective to replace the valve.

We charge $36.50 for a new barbecue cylinder, and it comes with a free fill-up. This way, you have the security of owning a brand-new cylinder, and the cost is just about the same.
